by Byron Jonas

If you just woke up from a very long sleep, then you would be forgiven if you did not know what Baywatch is. However, most people around the world know exactly what this TV serious is all about. Millions of people literally glued themselves to their seats each week to see their favorite character being doing heroic stuff.

This worldwide phenomenon is probably best known for its hot babes and hunky men strutting their stuff on one of California's beaches. Not only did the show highlight beautiful bodies both male and female however, but also brought the profession of life guarding to an all time high. Youngsters all over the world wanted to become lifeguards like Mitch Buchannon (David Hasselhoff), and many girls wanted to be just like J. C. Parker (Pamela Anderson).

Who could forget when the show first aired in 1990? It was a strange combination seeing bronzed bodies that were able to save lives and protect beach goers as well. Unfortunately, it did not sit well with many viewers initially and the series was subsequently canceled. This however did not deter Hasselhoff and a few other producers and directors because they knew Baywatch had huge potential.

News spread like fire and soon everyone was hooked on Baywatch. It became so popular that the Guinness Book of World Records thought it apt to give them a spot in their book namely being the most viewed TV series worldwide. More than one billion people per week throughout the world, watched it at any given time.

Why would a show like this get such a cult-like following? It could be because of its interesting plot. With a very sexy team of lifesavers, the sea and white beaches, the director managed to capture the actors as they saved lives in the water as well as on land in a unique way. Their personal stories were also true to many and we could all identify with their shortcomings or successes in their everyday lives.

All the stories were centered on an element of danger and mystery while people were being saved. Millions of people just loved it when the camera slowed down and zoomed in on the actors, as they were running on the beach with rescue-can in hand and hair blowing in the wide. Their red swimsuits also had a certain appeal to both young and old. Having to deal with problems in their own lives and catching serial killers or helping to defuse bombs and rescuing people in earthquakes, gave the audience excellent entertainment which is set in a relaxed beach atmosphere.

Not only did the series entertain, but it also highlighted real lifeguards and what they are exposed to every day. People suddenly had more respect for them and started heading their warnings on the beaches around the world. This is all thanks to the show Baywatch.
